The Uniqueness of Landscape Photography

Why is landscape photography such a unique experience? Just ask the photographers who capture these breathtaking shots. Geoff Ross is an Australian-born landscape and nature photographer, who travels to remote areas to get some very unique landscape images. His pictures have a very other-worldly look to them. He is a compositional artist, who uses color and light to create these surrealistic images of planet earth that at first glance, appear to be the product of a very vivid imagination. His photo of “Mt. Aspiring at Sunset, New Zealand” is absolutely stunning.

Generally, a landscape is considered to be a natural scenic view of some place. That view may be panoramic or it may focus on one small detail of the whole picture, which might be accomplished in a number of ways. Shortening depth of field by opening up the lens aperture is one way. The photographer then focuses on an object in the foreground, allowing the background to become blurred. Another way of getting close detail is to use a macro lens. Duane Frybarger is a photographer who gets engrossed in the details of nature, such as a budding rose.

Using a macro lens, Duane photographed the center of a pink rose (“Pink Rose Center”), the veins in a green leaf (“Green Leaf”) and other wonders of nature, while exploring Golden Gate Park, San Francisco in August 2008. Though not what most people would think of as landscapes, these images are part of what makes landscape work so unique and interesting. Nigel Danson, a landscape photographer from the U.K., likes to capture water images – lakes, water falls, seascapes and ponds. His use of light, color and reflection is artistically unique and one reason he is an award-winning photographer.
